The Adoption
Process
Adopting
a rescued Border Collie is a commitment for the rest of the dog's life,
and keeping a BC may mean significant lifestyle changes for you and
your family. We of MidAmerica Border Collie Rescue will work with you
to identify the dog best suited to your home and situation, based on
the dog's individual personality, temperament, and activity level.
Because
our first responsibility is to our rescued dogs, and in order to ensure
that the rescued dog has the best possible chance to succeed in its
new home, we have developed an adoption process to get us the information
we need to be sure your dog is a perfect match.
-
Adoption
Application -- This will give us the basic information about
you and your family and what kind of border collie you are looking
for. This is used in step 2.
-
Phone
Interview -- One of our volunteers will be in contact with
you [ known as your PC; Personal Contact ] after we receive your application
to talk with you and get to know you and your family. This isn't so
much an interview as it is, getting to know your lifestyle, activities,
family members, other pets, experiences, and many other things. This
is an open conversation, a time for you to be relaxed and talk about
yourself!
-
Vet
Check -- After the phone interview your PC will contact
your vet to follow up on your pet's medical background. We make sure
the animals were kept up to date on shots, heartworm prevention, and
any other medicines that were prescribed by your vet. You will need
to contact your vet to release this information to us.
-
Personal
Reference Check -- We talk to at least one personal reference.
Your personal reference helps us get more familiar with your lifestyles,
and your family. They aren't necessarily vouching for your as a pet
owner, but more drawing a picture of your family from an outside look.
Please choose someone that has dogs, or dog experience as they will
need to know you more at that level to help us the most.
-
Home
Visit -- This is the last step of our adoption process.
One of our volunteers will set up a time to meet you, your family,
and your residence pets. This is our final chance to get to know what
kind of border collie is going to be the best for you. Please choose
a time when all family members will be home to ask questions and discuss
the upcoming new companion. The volunteer that comes will more than
likely bring a border collie with them to help the both of you visualize
your new companion.
After all
the information is gathered, the application is sent on to MBCR's Board
of Directors for final approval. Once the application is approved, then
we can finalize which dog in rescue will be a good match.
Once the right border collie is found, the adoption will take place.
At this point you will be working with the foster home. The adoption
fee is $225, made out to MidAmerica Border Collie Rescue and given to
the foster home at the time of adoption. The foster home will mail the
check with the adoption contract to the Treasurer. MBCR dogs are up
to date on all shots, heartworm tested, spayed or neutered, and microchipped.
The adoption fee helps off set the expenses incurred while the dog was
in foster care.
Please keep in mind that we cover 6 states and receive applications
from all over our territory, many are all interested in the same dog.
So, the applications must be complete and thorough so the right home
can be chosen between the applications submitted. If you are not chosen
for the original dog you were interested, do not despair. We have new
border collies coming in all the time and the next one could be your
perfect match.
