Jake

From Courtesy Listing Pages

An adopted Border Collie

Some of you may remember Jake from the Courtesy Listing pages. Although Jake was not officially an MBCR dog, we would still like to share his Success Story!

Jake was adopted from a group that does Labrador rescue work. They contacted MBCR to assist them in finding him the right home. They had him for about 3 years!! His physical needs were met. He was up to date on his shots, on heartworm prevention, and was kept in a clean environment.

Being a border collie, that was not enough. He lived in a 10x10 kennel which was in a barn. They say they allowed him out to run with the other dogs daily. None of his emotional needs were met.

Jake was so insecure. He absolutely latched on to any human being that would take a minute to acknowledge him. I do mean latch on literally. He would wrap his front paws around anyone and lay his head on them. If you were sitting down, he would climb on top of you and lay his head on you. He also flinched anytime a hand was raised to pet his head.

He would fight with one of our female dogs. We were told he hates male dogs. He would also fence fight with any dog outside the fence.

He would herd anything that moved.

He had never been inside of a house to my knowledge. So everything in a house was foreign to him. He crouched down and ran in a panic the first time the ceiling fan came on. He was terrified of our house cat and his skin was dry and his coat was brittle.

Today, only 3 months since we got him, Jake is a changed dog. He is not as insecure. He is just plain loveable. He still wants to be with people any chance he can, but he doesn't necessarily have to be in their laps. He gets along well with all dogs now. Males and females, it doesn't matter and he no longer fence fights.

His herding has been redirected to things that we do not mind him herding.

He enjoys being inside our home now. With the exception of the house cat, he has no fears. Yes, he is still afraid of the cat. That obstacle may take a little more time to overcome.

He has been on a diet of Innova dry with a little can. He also gets Prairie brand raw diet occasionally. He is a slinky muscular 65 lb boy. His skin is no longer dry and his coat shines.

Jake now fits in perfectly with our pack. He is a perfect example of what a rescued border collie can become if allowed to BE a border collie. With only 3 months of patience and consistency, he has become a joy to be with. I have to admit, the first few weeks I had my doubts about whether he would work out or not; but I just couldn't stand the thought of him going back to that lab "rescue" place or being bounced from home to home.

In the short amount of time that Jake has been with us, we have fallen in love with him. I can only imagine his possibilities in the years to come.
